Meet a Scientist: Making a Quantum Computer

If you watch the news or the Marvel movies, you’ve probably heard the word “quantum”. It may sound mysterious, but quantum physics is a well understood field of how thing behave when they are very very small. Scientists and engineers are working hard to make a new kind of computer which would take advantage of quantum physics in the way it does calculations.

Dr. Bethany Niedzielski Huffman from MIT Lincoln Laboratory will share about these quantum computers and her work using nanofabrication to make them into physical hardware.

  • About the Expert
    Most kids ask a lot of questions, but I never grew out of it. I loved science because I wanted to understand how the world works, and then use that understanding to make it work better. In pursuit of that goal, I continued my schooling through a bachelors, masters, and PhD in physics.

    I really enjoyed working hands-on in the lab, which led me to a career in nanofabrication working to make a quantum computer with superconducting qubits at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

    I grew up in Connecticut, went to school in New York, then Michigan, and am so happy to be back with my people in New England. Outside of work, I enjoy playing video games, singing karaoke or in choir, and horseback riding.
